Teaching and Research
I am fascinated by original source material, and I gain great satisfaction from the process of understanding early manuscripts and printed sources. My research has included a study of the Tabley House Lute Book (a re-discovered manuscript of 17th-century French and English lute music), and I have an on-going interest in the role of plucked instruments in continuo playing and in historical improvisation. For several years I taught classes in music history at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and at Indiana University (Bloomington). Since then I have been invited to deliver lectures on performance practice at Liverpool University, Birmingham University and the University of St. Andrews and educational presentations at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. I am a classical guitar teacher at South Wilts Grammar School in Salisbury.
